How To Become a Member
Achilles members run and walk with such disabilities as stroke, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, arthritis, amputation, visual impairment, MS, cystic fibrosis, cancer, traumatic head injuries, transplants, and other conditions often thought to be reasons to stay "out of the running."
Some Achilles members are experienced athletes and others are exercising for the first time. The only prerequisite is an interest in exercise and a willingness to try.
Achilles members enjoy the companionship of other members and volunteers and the lift one gets to both body and mind from regular exercise.
You needn't worry about what to wear for your first workout. We are not trend setters. This means wearing something loose and comfortable, suitable to the weather. Make sure you can move comfortably and be ready to exercise.
Don't be concerned about being out of shape. People who have never exercised before tend to improve faster than those in better shape! Besides, the point is to have fun exercising. Whether you run a 4-minute km or walk at 30-minute pace, we welcome all speeds and all abilities.
As a volunteer you are not expected to be a professional, or an expert on health or fitness or physical disabilities. You simply need the desire to help those who are physically less fortunate than yourself. Your role is that of a companion. You are there for safety, morale, conversation, fun and exercise.
